Efficient Appliences
Here is a list of 3 enerlgy inefficient appliances:
- Washing Machine
- Air Conditioner
- Refrigerator
Washing Machines are one of the most energy inefficient appliances, but there are many ways to make sure you are buying an energy efficient machine.
- Choose a front loader: A Front Loader Washing Machine is an amazing 60% more energy efficient than a top loader. This can save you a lot of precious money when it comes to your bill
- Buy a dry washing machine: A dry washing machine works differently to a regular old washing machine. First, it only requires one cup of water. The dry masterpiece works by using thousands of tiny chips. These chips are released into the dry machine, along with a cup of water with some detergent in it. After the clothes are put into the machine just like a normal washing machine, the cup of detergent water is released into the machine and heated to absorb the dirt. The plastic chips will then dissolve the water, which contains the dirt. The plastic chips will go into a compartment located blow the washing machine, and your clothes come out of the wash virtually dry! (Refer to figure 3)
Air Conditioners use a lot of power, and they are one of the major causes during summer to power outages.
- Evaporative Air Cons: Evaporative air conditioners work by increasing the humidity instead of decreasing it. They are much more energy efficient than usual conventional air conditioners but they only work with the windows open and when the humidity is low
- Reverse cycle air cons: Reverse cycle air cons are units that can not only cool your home, they can also heat it. Not only are they more energy efficient than conventional air cons at cooling your home, they are just as energy efficient when heating it
Although Refrigerators don't use much power, they need to be on 24/7, and that adds up to a lot of power
- Keep your fridge at a reasonable temperature: You still want your fridge to work properly, but try not to go over what you need with the temperature control. Don't put the setting too high but don't put it too low or you will be using lots of unnecessary power
- Clean dust from around and behind the fridge: Too much dust around your fridge will make it work harder using more energy. Try to clean dust from around your fridge with a vacuum cleaner regularly
How to know if an appliance is energy efficient:
1. Check the label
On most appliances, a star rating label (Refer to figure 4) will be shown on the front of the product. Make sure you look at the label before buying and consider whether this appliance would be energy efficient.
2. Choose the right product for your budget
Choosing an energy efficient appliance is easier said than done. Yes, it will be pretty easy to find a 5 star one in the shops, but finding a high enough star rating that is within your budget is not so easy. Make sure you choose the product that you think is appropriate for your budget (so it doesn't have to be 5 stars), but don't choose a 1 star product.
